What is Holter Monitoring?

  •  Holter monitoring is a continuous electrocardiogram (EKG) of the heart’s rate and rhythm, for 24 hours.
  • Electrodes are applied to the chest area and are attached to a small recording device.
  • During the 24 hours that the monitor is worn, the patient will keep a diary of activities and symptoms.
  • It takes about 15 minutes to have the monitor put on.
  • The patient must return the following day to have the monitor removed and return the diary.
  • This test must be ordered by a doctor and be scheduled.

  • Do not apply ointment, lotion, or powder to the chest area.
  • No restrictions on medications, eating, or drinking.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.

What to Expect After the Monitor is in Place.

  • Do not get X-Rays while wearing the monitor.
  • Do not get the electrodes or monitor wet.No showering.
  • Do not use an electric blanket, water bed, or heating pad while wearing  the monitor.
