Echocardiogram (ECHO)

What is  an Echocardiogram?

  • An echocardiogram is a noninvasive test that uses ultrasound (sound waves or sonar) to evaluate the structures of the heart, and how well the heart is working.
  • As you lay on your left side, warmed gel is applied to your chest and a wand like device called a transducer is moved over the chest area to view images of the heart and it’s structures.
  • The test takes about 30 minutes to complete.
  • The images are recorded on a disc and can be viewed even after the test.
  • The test must be ordered by a doctor and scheduled.

Why is an Echocardiogram done?

  • The test will help the doctor to evaluate:
    • The size of the heart and thickness of it’s walls.
    • How well the heart is pumping.
    • The chamber sizes.
    • How well the valves are working.
