What is an Echocardiogram?
- An echocardiogram is a noninvasive test that uses ultrasound (sound waves or sonar) to evaluate the structures of the heart, and how well the heart is working.
- As you lay on your left side, warmed gel is applied to your chest and a wand like device called a transducer is moved over the chest area to view images of the heart and it’s structures.
- The test takes about 30 minutes to complete.
- The images are recorded on a disc and can be viewed even after the test.
- The test must be ordered by a doctor and scheduled.
