New surgery system from Stryker installed in BCHS operating rooms
Just over a year ago, Battle Creek Health System unveiled its new surgery center offering patients the comfort they deserve and the 'cutting-edge' technology they expect.
The seven new surgical suites offer some of the most sophisticated surgical and anesthesia equipment available including a unique waste management system from Stryker called the Neptune(r) 2 Ultra (N2). Each operating suite is equipped with one, plus another mobile unit to be used as needed.
The Neptune is a closed fluid waste management and smoke evacuation system consisting of a 'rover' and docking station. The rover unit collects surgical waste in the operating room and then quickly disposes of the fluids through the docking station with virtually no exposure to the patient or the health care staff.
"This new surgery facility and its unique components like the Stryker Neptune are part of our long-range plan to meet the ever-changing expectations for health care services," says Pat Garrett, president and CEO of Battle Creek Health System. "Adding a unit like this that virtually eliminates harmful exposure to fluids in the operating room is yet another example of our commitment to provide outstanding patient-centered medical care for our community."
Neptune was designed by a nurse in California to help prevent exposure to the surgical fluid produced by the operation. It makes the operating room more efficient and safer by allowing the staff to focus on patient care as oppose to other things like changing canisters, low suction, and surgical plume (smoke) generated by a cautery devices.
The N2 was in development for 3 1/2 years and went through different prototype stages. All those stages were perfected and tested at BCHS. "They were one of our main test sites and were a valuable key to the development of the system," says Brian Adloff, product manager at Stryker. "Battle Creek was the first in the state and the first in the country to use this new product. Thanks to the support of Bob Bartman, BCHS manager of sterile process and the operating room staff, Stryker was able to launch the new Neptune 2 earlier this month throughout the country."
"It is remarkable to think that out of all the hospitals in the U.S., BCHS was the first to help perfect and use this Stryker product that is now being introduced around the world," added Bartman. "This is another example of the commitment our hospital has toward bringing the best health care possible to our patients right here close to home."
