Filling holiday stockings with goodies is a long-held
tradition at this time of the year. That is why Battle
Creek Health System is adding a new spin to that theme
by wrapping every child born in December at the health
system's Family Birth Center in a unique holiday stocking.
"This is a very special time of the year for families,"
said Carole Thomas, director of Patient Care at BCHS.
"What better way to create a family holiday tradition
than to start out life with your very own holiday stocking."
The folklore of hanging stockings from the fireplace
originated from the famous legend of Saint Nicholas.
The 1800s story is about a father of three young daughters
who could not afford dowries for their marriages. Saint
Nicholas heard of the man's plight and secretly put
gold coins down their chimney; the coins ended up in
the girls' stockings that were hanging by the fireplace
to dry. Clement Moore wrote of this in his classic seasonal
poem 'A Visit from Saint Nicholas.' "...The stockings
were hung by the chimney with care in hopes that St.
Nicholas soon would be there."
The Battle Creek Health System Family Birth Center,
which opened in 1999, is Calhoun County's leading birthing
facility. About 1,400 babies are born in the center's
11 birthing and 4 postpartum suites annually. Each suite
is decorated to feel like home while at the same time
the most up-to-date technology and equipment to assist
in the birth process is at the caregiver's fingertips.
Mom remains in the same comfortable room throughout
the birthing process: labor, delivery, recovery and
postpartum. To ensure mom's complete comfort and relaxation,
each suite has a Jacuzzi/whirlpool bath, a wood entertainment
center, and is decorated in a restful color scheme.
Safe and secure newborns is a top priority in the Family
Birth Center, which is why Battle Creek Health System
is one of just a small number of hospitals in the entire
state of Michigan to have the Code Alert security system.
Infants are given a wristband that emits an electronic
signal and ensures that a baby is only moved with proper
authorization.
Battle Creek Health System is accredited by the Joint
Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
and has earned the Joint Commission's 'Gold Seal of
Approval.' BCHS provides excellent health care for the
community and promotes wellness for the whole person
with access and compassion for all. For the latest medical
