BCHS physician honored by state medical society
Mahesh C. Karamchandani, MD, a Calhoun County colorectal surgeon and member of the Battle Creek Health System medical staff, received a Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) Community Service Award in conjunction with National Doctors' Day on March 30. He joins seven other state physicians nomination by their peers at the county level for their volunteer medical service, overseas missionary work and volunteer health education projects, among other community service efforts.
Dr. Karamchandani was selected for his long list of community involvement including his role establishing the Calhoun County Cancer Control Coalition that was instrumental in getting the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners to pass the Secondhand Smoke-free Workplace resolution, which took effect on January 1, 2008. Doctor Karamchandani also is a member of the Battle Creek Community Foundation, where he serves on the health grant making and health oversight committees.
"Providing community service is at the core of professionalism," says Jeffrey Mitchell, MD, vice president of medical affairs at Battle Creek Health System. "It is gratifying that Dr. Karamchandani was singled out for giving so much back to our community each year."
Dr. Karamchandani received his medical degree from Baroda University in India, a fellowship from Lehigh Valley Hospital (Pennsylvania) in Colon & Rectal Surgery, and is board certified in both general and colorectal surgeries. He is a senior partner in the Colon and Rectal Surgery Center. He came to Battle Creek in 1987.
Nearly two-thirds of MSMS members provide charity care for an average of 3.7 hours each week, according to the most recent MSMS Physician Data Survey on Practice Characteristics. Additionally, MSMS physicians provide an average of 5.6 hours of medical volunteer service and 6.2 hours of non-medical volunteer service each month.
