Soul food chef will have Battle Creek cookin'

Lindsey Williams, author of Neo Soul, featured in People Magazine, and a guest on 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' where he talked about his story of weight loss, is coming to Battle Creek.

Williams will be cooking up some food demonstrations at Burnham Brook Center on Tuesday, February 12, at 6 p.m. A health fair begins prior to that at 5:30 p.m. along with book signings. Free tickets to the event are available at Battle Creek Community Foundation, Burnham Brook, Maranatha Original Chur of God, Mildred's ABC Boutique, Summit Pointe, the Y Center, or by calling Brenda Troutner at (269) 441-5974 to RSVP. Seating is limited.

Williams, grandson of Harlem's queen of soul food, Sylvia Woods, is a former record executive and now the owner of Neo Soul Events and Catering. He grew up around the kitchen of his grandmother's legendary restaurant in New York where he learned the art of authentic soul food cooking. But he was also always overweight. When he tipped the scales at 400 pounds, he knew he had to make some drastic changes. As a result, he created his own healthy way of creating soul food.

"I am proud of my soul food tradition," says Williams, "but I want to give people the best food that I can by offering alternatives that will help them live healthier lives. I will be sharing some of my favorite recipes and special ways of preparing more healthful meals without sacrificing taste. I hope Battle Creek will dig in by attending the event."

Soul food is known for its good taste, but also for its questionable nutrition. Neo Soul features more than 100 low-fat recipes including 'Grandma's Roasted Turkey," 'Okra Gumbo,' 'Neo Sweet Potato Pie,' and 'Blueberry Buckle.' Williams brings readers soul food with a healthy twist-old favorites and new recipes.
