BCHS physician to discuss custom-fit total knee replacement surgery
Custom-fit total knee replacement surgery is the newest technology in orthopaedic procedures. An implant is created to precisely match the patient's specific knee measurements. This allows the physician to replace the knee with an implant created especially for them, which makes recovery time quicker.
Dr. Joseph Burkhardt, an orthopaedic surgeon serving on the medical staff at Battle Creek Health System will speak on 'Custom-Fit Total Knee Replacement Surgery' on Wednesday, May 21, at 6:30 p.m. at Delton District Library, 330 North Grove Street, Delton, MI.
A light refreshment will be served at 6 p.m. followed by Dr. Burkhardt's presentation. Seating is limited. Reservations can be made by calling the class/seminar registration line at (877) GO2-BCHS (269-462-2247).
Customizing total knee replacements is the newest technology in the surgeons' arsenal. The process starts several weeks before the surgery when the patient has an MRI scan. The MRI makes precise measurements of the knee. Computer software at the OtisMed Company transforms that MRI image into a three-dimensional model of the arthritic knee and then virtually corrects any deformity to return the knee to its pre-arthritic state. A computerized 3-D image of the implant to be used at the time of surgery is then matched to the anatomically correct knee model. This helps determine the correct implant size and placement based on that patient's normal knee alignment.
"A set of customized 'cutting' guides is then created for use during the surgery," says Dr. Burkhardt who has special interest in sports medicine and joint reconstruction. "Each knee is unique and each set of MRI computer-matched custom surgical guides is one of a kind."
