Two BCHS nurses honored at the state level

Two nurses at Battle Creek Health System were chosen to attend the 2009 Institute of Nursing Excellence leadership conference this past month at Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville, MI.

The BCHS nurses selected were Heather Banning, RN in perioperative (surgery) services and Tamara Morse, RN, BSN of Family Birth Center.

The Institute of Nursing Excellence is sponsored by the Michigan Center for Nursing to enhance participants' leadership skills, support evidence-based practices, promote professional networking with peers from around the state, and allow individuals to recharge their passion for nursing as a career.

"These nurses exemplify caring professionalism as they live the mission, vision, and values of Battle Creek Health System and the Trinity Health organization," says Ann Pelissier Neeld, RN, MSN, MBA, vice president for patient care services and chief nursing officer at BCHS. "They raise the level of nursing in our organization everyday. We couldn't be more happy for them, and celebrate the recognition of these fine nurse associates."

"This is the third year that Battle Creek Health System has nominated nurses for this event," adds Patti Ernst, RN, BSN, nurse manager of the GYN/Med unit. "They are 2 of only 30 outstanding nurses in Michigan to be so honored this year. That speaks volumes about the quality our great staff."

"These nurses are known for their compassion, standards of clinical excellence, leadership, and community service," says Linda Klavon, MS, RN, CS, ACNP-BC, CEN, clinical nurse specialist for BCHS professional practice. "To be among the top 30 nurses out of approximately 300 nominated is quite an honor."

To be considered for this opportunity, nurses must spend at least half of their time at the bedside consistently demonstrate caring service, clinical excellence, strong professional values, a love for nursing, community outreach, and strong leadership potential. The nominations included letters of support from their direct care supervisors, a nursing peer, a non-nurse colleague, or team member.
