October is 'Breast
Cancer Awareness' month and what better time than now
to talk about the second most commonly diagnosed cancer
in Michigan.
Stephen Smiley, M.D., medical director of The Cancer
Care Center's medical oncology department at Battle
Creek Health System will explain what every woman and
man should know about breast cancer on Tuesday, October
11, at the Burnham Brook Center.
He will talk about screening recommendations, early
detection guidelines, risk factors, statistics on
occurrence, and treatment information. The program,
sponsored by Senior Health Partners begins at noon
and is free to the public.
"Even though it is the most frequently diagnosed
cancer among women, early detection is the key to survival," says
Dr. Smiley. "With regular screening, breast cancer
is more likely to be detected at an earlier stage,
when it is most treatable. The five-year survival rate
among women, whose breast cancer has not spread beyond
the breast at the time of diagnosis, is over 97% (for
intraductal).
Dr. Smiley has a medical degree from Wayne State University.
He completed his internship and residencies in internal
medicine at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center, Saint
Mary's Hospital where he was chief resident-internal
medicine and president of the House Staff Association,
and a fellowship in clinical oncology at University
of Wisconsin's Clinical Cancer Center. He is a member
of or served on committees with National Surgical Adjuvant
Breast and Bowel Project, Alpha Omega Alpha Honors
Medical Society, chair of the Oncology Pathology Conferences,
past president Calhoun County Medical Society, chair
of BCHS Breast Tumor Board, member of Michigan State
Medical Society House of Delegates to mention a few.
He is also medical director of Lifespan Good Samaritan
Hospice and board member of the Michigan Society of
Hematology & Oncology.
Dr. Smiley was named the Top Physician Accruer for
2000-2001 by the Grand Rapids Clinical Oncology Program
(GRCOP) recognizing him as the top physician who demonstrates
outstanding dedication and commitment to clinical trials
run by GRCOP.
He is board certified by the National American Board
of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Medical
Oncology.
