Smoking Cessation Clinic Offered at BCHS
Holiday resolutions are much easier to fulfill if there is a support system in place-one like Battle Creek Health System's smoking cessation program. In February, BCHS will again host the American Cancer Society's 'Fresh Start' program, a free, four-part smoking cessation clinic Tuesdays and Thursdays, February 2, 4, 9, and 11. The classes will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. in The Cancer Care Center's conference room. Participants should enter from the cancer center's main entrance off of Emmett Street.
This program is a behavior modification training that can be used in conjunction with many 'quit' methods and nicotine replacement therapies. It consists of four successive lessons that help the participant understand nicotine/tobacco addiction and then to guide her or him to successfully quite the habit. Class topics include 'Understanding Why and How,' 'Mastering the First Few Days,' 'Mastering Obstacles' and ' Staying Quit and Enjoying it Forever.'
"Research indicates that smoking increases your chances of developing emphysema, heart disease, and lung and other cancers," says Deb Pierce of the BCHS pulmonary rehabilitation center. "But, quitting smoking, no matter how long you have been indulging, does decrease your risk of smoking-related diseases, and it does improve your health as well as those around you."
Anyone resolving to quit smoking in 2010 should call (877) GO2 BCHS (877-462-2247) to register for or receive more information about the classes.
