BCHS Cancer Care Center Hosting Lymphoma Symposium

The Cancer Care Center at Battle Creek Health System is pleased to announce The Fourth Annual Cancer Symposium to be held Saturday, May 16, 2009, in Battle Creek, Michigan from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year's topic will be 'lymphoma.' Brocure

The conference will be held at McCamly Plaza Hotel in downtown Battle Creek. The cost is $100 for allied health professionals; $150 for physicians. Proceeds from this event will benefit cancer-related programs at Battle Creek Health System

At the symposium leading experts from around the country will address issues such as diagnosis, current state-of-the-art management, disease process and topics in the fields of surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology. This is a must-attend symposium for anyone caring for patients with lymphoma.

Lymphoma is a general term for cancers that develop in the lymphatic system, the part of the body that controls the immune system. The most common type of lymphoma is called Hodgkin's disease; all others are grouped together and called non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. Like all types of cancer, lymphomas are diseases of the body's cells. Healthy cells grow, divide, and replace themselves in an orderly manner. In Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, cells grow abnormally, then divide too rapidly and grow without any order. When too much tissue is formed, tumors begin to grow.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided and the program will qualify for continuing education credits.

The Cancer Care Center was recently awarded its second Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeon's 'Outstanding Achievement Award 'with Commendation' as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program-the only hospital in Michigan to receive this honor twice.

For more information about registering, call (269) 966-8002. Space is limited.

The Cancer Care Center recently unveiled its newly renovated facilities adding 6,000 square feet of new area and 3,000 square feet of renovation giving critically needed treatment space for cancer patients, lifesaving new technology, a more healing environment, and room to grow complementary therapies.

The expansion project makes available an American Cancer Society (ACS) resource library for patients and community members who wish to learn more about this disease. The Cancer Center also offers an ACS program called 'Road to Recovery' that provides transportation for patients to their lifesaving and life-sustaining treatments at the hospital.

The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons recognizes Battle Creek Health System as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program. This approval is the highest awarded to hospitals nationwide. BCHS is the only hospital in Michigan to receive this designation twice.

Approval by the Commission on Cancer is awarded only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment of cancer and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performances. In order to maintain approval, facilities with approved cancer programs must also undergo an on-site review every three years.

Receiving treatment in a Commission on Cancer-approved program ensures that a patient has access to quality care close to home.
