BCHS cardiologist to discuss the management of CHF
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a condition in which the heart's function as a pump that delivers oxygen-rich blood to the body is inadequate to meet the body's needs. CHF can be attributed to diseases that weaken the heart, stiffen it, or increase the demand for blood beyond the ability of that organ to deliver it.
Dr. Paul Miluk, a cardiologist on the Battle Creek Health System medical staff will talk about 'Medical Management of the CHF Patient' on Wednesday, May 6 at 1 p.m. in the hospital's Medical Office Building (MOB) Room 309. This will be part of an ongoing program for the BCHS Living With CHF support group. This program is free to the public, but because seating is limited, reservations are needed. To register or for more information, call BCHS cardiac health services at (269) 966-8199.
Dr. Miluk will focus on the treatment and management of this disease, such as diagnostic procedures (EKG, echocardiogram, chest x-ray), medications, and dietary management.
Many disease processes can impair the pumping efficiency of the heart, which can cause congestive heart failure. In the U.S., the most common causes of CHF are coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, alcohol abuse, and heart valve disorders.
Congestive heart failure can in fact affect many organs of the body not just the heart. Symptoms of CHF vary depending upon the individual but often fatigue is an early sign. Shortness of breath, especially during exercise can be a symptom. If a person than discontinues exercising, it can result in a buildup of fluid in the body, and the abdomen, legs, and ankles may swell.
