BCHS delivers first baby of New Year
in Calhoun County
While most of us were watching the New Year ringing
in on television, counting our blessings, or planning
our New Year's resolutions, Rebecca Woodbury and Dusten
Hoffman of Battle Creek were checking the fetal monitor
and timing her contractions. At 12:19 a.m., Rebecca gave
birth to a daughter, not only the first baby born at
Battle Creek Health System's Family Birth Center in 2010,
but also the first in Calhoun County. Alivia Mae weighed
8 lbs, 5 oz, and measured 20 inches.
The BCHS Family Birth Center, which opened in 1999,
is Calhoun County's leading birthing facility. About
1,200 babies are born in the center's 11 birthing and
4 postpartum suites annually. Each suite is decorated
to feel like home while at the same time the most up-to-date
technology and equipment to assist in the birth process
is at the caregiver's fingertips. Mom remains in the
same comfortable room throughout the birthing process:
labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum. To ensure
mom's complete comfort and relaxation, each suite has
a whirlpool bath, a wood entertainment center, and is
decorated in a restful color scheme.
Safe and secure newborns are a top priority in the Family
Birth Center, which is why
Battle Creek Health System is one of just a small number
of hospitals in the entire state of Michigan to have
the 'code alert' security system. Infants are fitted
with wristbands that emit electronic signals ensuring
that they are only moved with proper authorization.
BCHS and Growing Family's WebNursery(r), the nation's
leading in-hospital photographer of newborns, also offer
new parents the advantages of the Internet to share their
exciting news with the world. This free service gives
new moms the opportunity to safely post photos of their
new arrivals. Family and friends, whether they are in
Battle Creek or in some far off place in the world, can
share in the joy of a new baby by visiting www.bchealth.com
and clicking on the 'Web Nursery' icon. Parents can even
personalize their baby's first Web page by customizing
the background and adding their own welcome message.
For privacy, in compliance of Health Insurance Portability
Accountability Act (HIPAA) government guidelines that
govern privacy standards for health care information,
each site contains only the baby's first name, last initial,
and standard birth announcement information. The photos,
posted approximately 72 hours after the birth, rotate
off the site after 90 days.
Battle Creek Health System, sponsored by two parent
organizations--Trinity Health (the fourth largest Catholic
health system in the U.S. with 21 hospitals, 9 nursing
homes, 19 senior house facilities, 8 home health care
agencies, and 4 hospices in Michigan alone) and BCHS
Community Partners, is accredited by the Joint Commission
on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Battle
Creek Health System, a member of the Mercy Cancer Network,
is a recipient of the 2008 HealthGrades Orthopaedic Surgery
Excellence Award(tm) and 2010 Five Star rated for joint
replacement surgery and total knee replacement. HealthGrades
is a leading health care information company that provides
objective 'report card' ratings nationwide. BCHS provides
excellent health care for the community and promotes
wellness for the whole person with access and compassion
for all. For the latest medical information, visit the
