Lions take 'pride' in their devotion to helping the blind and partially
impaired by supporting blindness prevention programs throughout the world.
The Lakeview Lions Club demonstrated that recently by presenting Battle
Creek Health System's Diabetes Center with a check for $500 to be used
for diabetes education for uninsured and underinsured community residents.
"Members of the local Lions clubs know that diabetes accounts for
a least one-half of all the blindness in the United States annually," said
Frank Svekric, chair of the Lakeview Lions White Cane initiative. "Through
our money-making projects, we try to help those who are afflicted with
this disease."
"This generous gift will be used in our diabetes scholarship program," said
Joan McHale, Diabetes Center program manager. "It will go a long
way in helping diabetics with little or no insurance and their families
to attend special diabetes education classes offered by BCHS. We certainly
appreciate the good works of our local Lions."
The Battle Creek Health System Diabetes Center offers physician support
services, case management, professional and clinical staff education,
clinical interventions, and patient education. The outpatient services
are designed to help individuals with diabetes to develop and practice
the self-management skills that will improve their health status and
quality of life, and reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications.
This is the tenth year the Lakeview Lions Club has earmarked funds to
help local residents manage diabetes at BCHS. The Diabetes Center offers
the only program in Calhoun County recognized by the American Diabetes
Association.
