BCHS physician to speak on healthy living: 'When to Get Health Checkups'

Daniela Renkiewicz, M.D.

Are you confused or unaware of when you should have certain health exams? There is a free program being offered that will answer your questions regarding the appropriate age and intervals for when you should receive various health maintenance exams in disease prevention.

Daniela Renkiewicz, M.D., an internist, will offer a special presentation about 'Preventive Care by the Numbers - When to Get Health Checkups' on Wednesday, November 28, at Burnham Brook Center. Senior Health Partners presents the program as part of its 'Aging Well' series, which is free to the public.

A light luncheon will be served at 11:30 a.m. followed by Dr. Renkiewicz's presentation at noon. Seating is limited. Reservations can be made by calling Senior Health Partners
at (269) 441-0948.

Lifestyle-related behaviors account for half of the ten leading causes of death in the United States. An important aspect in preventative medicine is taking a proactive approach in maintaining and improving your health. That means practicing prevention and maintaining good communication with your physician through regular visits and examinations, when appropriate.

"It's important to understand that the type and frequency of visits to your doctor and screening tests differ with each individual, depending on a wide variety of factors, including health status, past medical history, age, gender, family history and other criteria," says Dr. Renkiewicz. "There's no 'one-size-fits-all' plan for everyone."

Your partnership with your physician should include regular 'check ups' to help maintain your health and practice prevention. This can occur during an office visit devoted to health maintenance or when you are seeing your physician about other health concerns. "I can't over emphasis the importance of taking ownership and accepting responsibility for our own health," says Dr. Renkiewicz. "I am a firm believer in the adage about 'An ounce of prevention' going a long way in maintaining good health."

The areas of focus and evaluation a person should include are:

  • Identifying risk factors in your personal and family health history
  • Performing a focused exam, as appropriate
  • Obtaining needed screening tests at the correct intervals
  • Encouraging yourself to choose a healthy lifestyle
