BCHS associates honored
More than 200 Battle Creek Health System associates were honored recently-- one for her advocacy on behalf of cancer patients and the others for years of service (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years) as part of the annual BCHS Associate Recognition Celebration.
Annette Monks, a social worker in The Cancer Care Center, received the BCHS 2007-2008 Annual Outstanding Recognition Award. Iris Huggett, an LPN in the Family Birth Center, was singled out for her 40 years of service at the hospital.
Monks works very closely with cancer patients. She recently helped a young man who had reached the limits of his treatment options and wanted to spend his last days at his mother's home in California, and to put his feet in the ocean one last time. Monks made certain that her patient had enough pain medication and medical supplies to maintain comfort for his trip because he did not want to fly west, but ride in a vehicle so he could see the beauty of America, especially Mount Rushmore. He called Monks when he saw the carved Presidents' faces on the side of the mountain, and then again after arriving in California from a beach on the Pacific Ocean. A few days later he died. Monks helped the man realize his last and most important life dream.
