BCHS awarded full accreditation by state medical society
Battle Creek Health System's Department of Continuing Medical Education (CME) has again been granted a full four-year accreditation by the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) Committee on CME.
The MSMS assures that quality continuing medical education activities are available to Michigan physicians through review, evaluation, and accreditation. There is general agreement among physicians, educators, and CME administrators that the most effective CME is one that is an integral and regular part of the physician's practice.
"Educational activities at national meetings, medical schools, and other remote sites generally provide valuable updates to physicians," says Dr. Stephen Smiley, chair of the BCHS continuing medical education accreditation committee. "But some of those educational opportunities may not be as responsive to a specific physician's practice needs or be able to use a physician's actual practice as a basis for educational planning as a locally based CME activity. At BCHS, under the able direction of Dr. Alfred Hamady, medical director of CME, we strive to make certain that every physician on our medical staff has the opportunity to participate in CME programs. This accreditation validates the long hours of training and hard work our physicians perform in bringing high quality medical care to our community."
The BCHS CME component offers 180 hours of accreditation. Programs include grand rounds; tumor boards; medical, surgical, and thoracic case reviews; family practice;
OB/GYN; pulmonary care; and symposiums. The Michigan Legislature requires that, as a condition of annual renewal of licensure, a physician must complete over a three-year period at least 150 hours of CME courses or programs approved by the Michigan Board of Medicine.
