Local physician/author to autograph books at BCHS
Herman J. Elkmoss became a physician the usual way. He languished through lengthy lectures, was immersed in intense internships, and rode a rigorous residency regimen before finally receiving his medical degree from Moss State University Medical School. Those efforts solidified his real passion for healing others.
But his chronicler, Dr. Jeff Jones, a neurologist practicing in Battle Creek, is the only one who can tell the real story behind this lighthearted look at a journey through medicine. For Dr. Elkmoss, as some claim, is merely a figment of Dr. Jones' imagination, albeit a look at life that can cause one to move from laughter to tears and back again.
Dr. Jones will be on hand on Thursday, March 13, from 2-4 p.m. in the Battle Creek Health System inpatient lobby to sell and sign his book titled The Marvelous Adventures of Herman J. Elkmoss, MD. The cost of the book is $20 with all proceeds from this special event going toward the hospital's Little Help, Big Difference Fund. For those who are unable to attend the autograph session, signed books may also be purchased in the hospital gift shop. The public is welcome to attend.
"I had been researching Dr. Elkmoss for quite a while and then decided to share snippets of this work anonymously through the Calhoun County Medical Society newsletter," says Dr. Jones. "Dr. Elkmoss was quite a colorful fellow. When some of my colleagues finally figured out who was penning the articles, they encouraged me to compile my thoughts, formalize them, and have them printed so others outside the group could read them. I checked with Dr. Elkmoss's widow who gave me the 'go ahead, and I submitted my manuscripts for publication. This book is the culmination of those efforts."
When asked if Dr. Elkmoss was really just an extension of his own experiences, Dr. Jones says, "Oh, I don't know about that. There might be one or two similarities, but Herman is far more complicated than me. As I continue my research, I am finding him to have been way ahead of his time in terms of his unique observations and treatment of the human condition."
The Little Help, Big Difference Fund provides limited assistance to BCHS associates and patients who are going through difficult times because of a personal tragedy or family disaster.
