BCHS to celebrate National Hospital Week
Don't let the name fool you. Organizers say National Hospital Week (May 11-17) is not a celebration of health care's most recognizable buildings. It is a celebration of the miracles that happen inside them.
"We want people to understand hospitals are all about healing," says Pat Garrett, president and CEO of Battle Creek Health System. "Our focus is very positive. Physicians, nurses, and staff have one mission and that is to help people get well. National Hospital Week dates back to 1921 when a magazine editor in Chicago who hoped a community-wide celebration would alleviate public fears about the sterile facilities suggested it. The idea spread across the country and helped change the perception about hospitals from places of illness to places of healing. Today National Hospital Week is the nation's largest annual health care event.
