BCHS physician receives AMA Foundation award
Raakesh C. Bhan, MD, FCCM, FACA, FCCP, FACP, medical director of the critical care unit at Battle Creek Health System and senior member of the Critical Care Pulmonary Medicine group, is a recipient of the American Medical Association Foundation's 2008 Leadership Award.
The Leadership Awards are presented annually to medical students, residents/fellows, and physicians who exhibit outstanding leadership in organized medicine and/or community affairs. The awards provide leadership development training for the recipients. Dr. Bhan is one of only 14 established physician recipients of the AMA award this year.
Dr. Bhan completed residencies in radiation oncology at Michael Reese Hospital and in internal medicine at Edgewater Hospital, both in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Bhan than received a Fellowship in critical care medicine at Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital in Detroit.
He has served as the chief of medical staff and is currently chair of the BCHS credentials and the critical care committees. He has also been president of the Calhoun County Medical Society.
In the community, Dr. Bhan is a board member of the Battle Creek Area Math and Science Center and the Battle Creek YMCA.
In 2005, Dr. Bhan helped initiate the Keystone Project in the critical care unit in Battle Creek. Battle Creek Health System was one of the first hospitals in the U.S. to implement this a initiative that implements 'interventions' into normal ICU procedures that address quality issues -all to help BCHS provide even better care and service for its patients. Keystone: ICU changed the benchmarks of health care quality, dramatically reducing complications once regarded as nearly impossible to eliminate. Central intravenous (IV) lines can be a major source of infections in ICUs that harm patients and increase lengths of stay, which drive up costs. Participating hospitals in Keystone: ICU have reduced central IV line infections by nearly 50 percent-BCHS did even better.
The rate of ventilator associated pneumonia and bloodstream infections have also been reduced significantly under his guidance. BCHS is in the midst of implementing newer policies to prevent additional complications should they arise.
Battle Creek Health System, sponsored by two parent organizations--Trinity Health (the fourth largest Catholic health system in the U.S. with 12 hospitals, 9 nursing homes, 19 senior house facilities, 8 home health care agencies, and 4 hospices in Michigan alone) and BCHS Community Partners, is accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
