Welcome!
Diabetes
is a chronic disease that afflicts those whose bodies do not
produce enough insulin causing the blood sugar levels to rise.
It is the sixth leading cause of death by disease. Approximately
17 million people nationwide have diabetes; 2,200 people are
diagnosed with it every day, which means over 800,000 new
cases will be reported this year. Another 16 million Americans
have signs and symptoms of pre-diabetes - an increasingly
common condition in which glucose levels are higher than normal
but not yet diabetic.
Health care research indicates that these numbers are on
the rise because of the aging U.S. population and increases
in obesity and physical inactivity.
